Most kids thought turkey vultures were disgusting—except this guy. He argued fiercely that they were simply misunderstood. During our argumentative writing unit, he defended them with passion and humor. His reasoning soared higher than any bird has ever dreamed. He explained passionately that without them, the world would smell terrible and look even worse. And that the birds, obviously something we associate with death and decay, also symbolize renewal and rebirth. By the end, half the class agreed with him, and the other half were petrified. I appreciate a person who can find something beautiful in something not so beautiful.
