At the turn of the nineteenth century, this river became known as the most enchanted place in a thousand mile radius. It happened without warning on a moonless night. Suddenly, the heavens ignited with trails of silver and gold streaking across the firmament as if sparks were flying from God’s own anvil. The people who lived around the river saw the spectacle reflected in the river and believed God had sent gifts from heaven straight down into their body of rushing water. Church bells rang. Farmers prayed. People begged the preacher to baptize them right then in the river. And then, as word spread, people came from all over to not only be baptized but to collect small bottles of the blessed water.
