The Trickster Who Understood

This guy was a troublemaker, the kind teachers whisper about. (Of course, all teachers know that no one is really a troublemaker; there are only people who make bad choices for a stretch of time. Most of the time, people work it all out, and find at least some form of the straight and narrow.) But this guy - in spite of his love for living on the edge - loved stories about tricksters and clever heroes. When we read a tale featuring a kingfisher, he sat upright for the entire period. During the class discussion, he commented, “This bird knows how to survive.” His final project compared the kingfisher’s bold dives to his own life. It was brilliant, and he knew it. I hope this guy found his straight and narrow, and I hope he’s still making connections and using every opportunity to grow.

6” x 8”. Oil on 100% cotton paper.
